Lesson 11: The Computer as the Teacher’s Tool
This lesson
discusses about constructivism which was introduced by Jean Piaget
(1981) and Bruner (1990). They gave stress to knowledge discovery of new meaning, concepts, and principles in
the learning process. Students are also asked to apply
discovered knowledge to new situations in order to make their knowledge
applicable to real life situations. On the other hand while knowledge is
constructed by the individual learners in constructivism, knowledge can also be
socially constructed. Social constructivism
is an effort to show that the construction of knowledge is governed
by social, historical and cultural contexts. Vygotsky also stressed that
learning is affected by social influences and suggested the interactive process
in learning. This lesson also includes computer’s abilities like informative
tool which the computer provides vast amounts of information; communication
tool which the computer has been used in communication as evident by social
networking sites; constructive tool which the computer itself can be used for
manipulating information, visualizing one’s understanding and building new
knowledge; co-constructive tool which students work cooperatively and construct
understanding of existing knowledge; and situating tool which the computer can create
3-D images on display to give the user the feeling that are situated in a vital
environment.
As
to the experience, it was clear evidence that nowadays educators find computer
as a tool that will help them in teaching. For us students, computer is also
tool in which we can learn effectively when we use it. Through computer also we
are able to make and submit our CERA, we can edit videos, edit pictures, make a
research, and do other things that are related to our lesson. This is indeed a
tool wherein we can learn far better because it provides vast
information, easier communication and facilitates constructivism among the minds
of learners.
As
to the reflection, computer played as a vital role in teaching and learning process in
terms of giving us advantages and convenience. The trend nowadays is
information technology which makes use of the computer. This learning tool has
been already used in schools to provide and facilitate students’ learning. It
is obvious that even the youngest generation knew about it and how it is being
used. Student’s make their assignments, create projects, and do researches with
the use of computer. It really seems that our present civilization is dependent
on computers. It is in anyway advantageous if used wisely and purposely. A tool
for education is the computer. Teachers might need an advance equipment to help
them facilitate and provide information for the student. It can also promote
some strategies were teachers can use it to think the appropriate technique for
the learners.
As an application, in the learning process, most teachers do not rely
solely on themselves in imparting knowledge and information to their
students. Especially now in our modern
times, teaching has opened new methods of acquiring education. There is now emphasis of the concepts of
constructivism and social constructivism.
The need for students to discover by themselves new ideas, concepts, and
understanding of the vast world we live in is the prime concern of the teacher
and to meet this need, the teacher makes use of the computer. It is a way of easy and reliable access to
information and building up of communication and teamwork among students. This technology
is a big help to the teacher in fostering independent learning activities of
the students.
